Fort Collins is a Home Rule Municipality along the Cache La Poudre River in Northern Colorado. As the County Seat of Larimer County and home of Colorado State University, Fort Collins stands as the leading cultural center of Northern Colorado.

Camp Collins, named for Colonel William O. Collins, was established near Laporte in 1862 to protect the southern option Overland Trail. The original camp was subject to flooding and moved four miles downstream to the Poudre location in 1864.

The town of Fort Collins was primarily an agricultural settlement and was chosen to be the site of the primary land grant university for Colorado in 1879. The Univerity took on the name Colorado State University (CSU) in 1957 and continues to be the flagship of the Colorado State University system.

The 2010 population of Fort Collins was 143,986. The population of Larimer County was 251,494.

Fort Collins sits on I25 at the base of the Rocky Mountains with access to Rocky Mountain National Park and other scenic treasures.
